Why not? That would be the correct question!
Santander is an easy-going and safe city in Northern Spain. It is a unique destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the authentic Spanish culture, having the experience of living for a while in a city not yet affected by mass tourism, part of the Camino de Santiago, surrounded by historic towns and natural reserves.
The city is well-connected by direct flight with main European destinations and linked by National Rail and roads. Santander can boast of having miles of beaches in the heart of the town and its surroundings.
Our school is located right in the middle of the city. Close by is the famous beach of Sardinero. You are just a walk away to jump into the sea after your lessons every day!
Imagine enjoying a few hours of fun workshops improving your Spanish and then, just a few steps away, having a large variety of beaches to choose from. Does that sound like a plan to you? Keep reading!
For those who love sports, the city is famous for the multiple water sports you can enjoy in the city. We are a Worldwide known destination for surfing and sailing. Also, the traditional sport in town is rowing and being the city in a bay allows you to enjoy kayaking, SUP or snorkelling safely.
It’s not only water sports you can enjoy here, but we also have lots of options for those loving nature, mountains, and trekking. Less than an hour away, you can enjoy the peace that wild nature gives you while discovering The Valley of Cabuerniga with its beautiful forests and pretty villages, also famous for its culinary scene!
Picos de Europa and Potes are also a drive away (a beautiful and scenic one, by the way). This mountain range is now getting in the international spotlight, but it’s still a must-visit during your time in Cantabria.
What about food? We have nothing to envy others! Our region has everything you’re looking for!
From Michelin star restaurants overlooking the seaside like El Serbal to traditional seafood restaurants in our port to the delicacies of the mountain cheeses and stews in the valleys! Any sweet tooth out there? Our local cheesecake has won awards, and quality labels protect our traditional desserts such as Sobaos or Quesada, and they are considered part of our local culture! We do not advise anyone to come over while on a diet!
Yes, everything is as I am mentioning and more! Santander is slowly innovating, and a few years ago, the government established a vast program: the city will become a cultural hub.
We started with the Centro Botin, a project from Banco Santander that now holds Modern Art exhibitions in a stunning location right in the middle of the city. Also, the iconic Reina Sofia Museum has invested in our town with the main project, and a new museum is opening soon!
History wise, there are multiple places in town to learn more about the city and country history. Don’t forget our region holds several of the most important caves in the World, being Altamira the main one but having many others to visit just a few minutes away driving where you can admire cave paintings from our ancestors!
I should not forget to mention villages such as Santillana del Mar or Carmona that were added to the ranking of most beautiful towns in Spain.
Also, Santander is a perfect base to travel to other main Spanish destinations such as Bilbao, an hour away, or Asturias.
What do you think? Did I convince you of coming over? If you are still doubting, check the post 24 hours in Santander for more inspiration!
Hope to see you soon!
Cecilia.
